The Organic Farm - Animals Our farming year starts in April, May when enough grass has grown for grazing. We use portable solar powered electric fences for horse grazing in one acre portions. The horses (and next year cattle), are limited in their grazing until the grass is pruned. Several days later chickens are brought in a portable chicken coup with a portable electric fence. The chickens feed on the insects and nutrients in the field, spread the manure and add their own fertilizer. Eggs are collected once a day. In this way the fields provide feed for the animals and are fertilized and pruned in the process. This continues until the fall when some of the chickens are harvested.
Starting in the spring the herd of goats is moved to portable fenced in areas of the property that have steep, rocky hill sides with locust trees, poison ivy and vines. The mothers give birth in March, April so the herd includes a number of kids. The goats are organically feed as they rid the property of noxious vegetation. They are rotated in such areas until the fall when some of the goats are sold and others bred for the next year.
The pigs also help in land up keep. Their fenced-in areas are also moved as they clear vines. They are provided food from our gardens as well as from the land. The fattened pigs are sold in the fall. Information on Pork Sale
